Mask Statment for Families

Mask Statement to Families

In order to keep our campus community healthy, everyone is required to properly wear a mask (covering nose and mouth) while entering campus. Although masks are not required outdoors, this will serve as verification that all have a mask to wear while indoors. Everyone is required to wear a mask indoors in K-12 settings per the California Department of Public Health. Masks will be available for anyone that needs a mask.  Refusal to wear a mask indoors may result in students being removed from school.  The first three days of absences,  due to refusal to wear a mask indoors, will be marked verified “parent request.”  Additional absences, due to refusal to wear a mask, will be marked unexcused and may result in a referral to School Attendance Review Board (SARB).  A parent or guardian may request independent studies as an alternative school placement.

Brookhurst is a Gold Ribbon School

This year, the State Department of Education created a new award to recognize excellent schools—the California Gold Ribbon award. Brookhurst Junior High School was one of only 373 schools out of the more than 2,600 junior high schools and high schools in California to receive this prestigious award. Seven other AUHSD schools were also recognized.

State Superintendent of Education Tom Torlakson said, "This award is a direct reflection of the dedication, hard work, and vision of your school's educational community. These schools are academically successful, vibrant, and innovative centers of learning and teaching. They provide great examples of the things educators are doing right—embracing rigorous academic standards, providing excellence and creativity in teaching, and creating a positive school climate."

Brookhurst received this award based on its  innovative Small Learning Communities initiative.

AUHSD Superintendent Michael Matsuda said "The awarding of this prestigious honor to eight of our campuses validates their successful emphasis on preparing students to be competitive in the 21st century global society," Matsuda said. "It reflects the hard work of our students and teachers; we are enormously proud of their accomplishments."
